ABSTRACT

The aim of this chapter is to explore the role of the father in the development of the at-risk infant. To a large extent, the study of fathering has been restricted to term infants. The expansion of our analysis of fathering to include other types of infants is an important step in assessing the limitations of our generalizations about fathering in infancy. The study of fathers has changed and matured over the past decade. These indices of growth can be summarized by a set of assumptions concerning the appropriate conceptual framework for understanding the father’s role in infancy.
