ABSTRACT

A source of concern to successive governments has been the fact that indigenous Fijians make proportionately less use of the educational system at the higher levels and accordingly do not qualify to the same degree for entry to professions and highly skilled occupations. The Fijian Education Achievement Project used a random sample of 41 secondary schools—with separate samples for the analysis of Fiji Junior and New Zealand School Certificate results. Although an equal proportion of indigenous Fijians are admitted to the University they come with lower levels of academic performance; thus it is no surprise that they generally do not do well as the Indo-Fijians. The Government is determined to have nearly equal participation rates at all levels of education for the two main ethnic groups. There was no difference between ethnic groups in access to electricity in the home—there was a figure of 52% for both groups.
