ABSTRACT

The focus of this second part of the book is research about a speech measure of a person’s concurrent anxiety. I started this work over 30 years ago. In this chapter, I describe the initial context of this research, including the prospective purposes of the measure and my reasons for choosing the particular dimension of speech I selected. The initial context influenced the subsequent direction of our research. The next chapter describes the measure and its properties. Subsequent chapters present our investigations of its validity as an anxiety indicator.
