ABSTRACT

Up to this point, our discussion of transmission has dealt exclusively with the responses of single cells. However, this is somewhat of an idealiza tion, for neurons are not found in isolation. Rather, they are bundled to gether in large numbers in the transmission pathways and ganglia of the nervous system. Many recorded responses are, thus, necessarily the sum of the signals from many individual cells. The discussion in this chapter is, therefore, aimed at understanding the responses that are recorded from groups of neurons.
