In What Sense Do Pigeons Learn Concepts?

Much recent work on complex discrimination learning in animals makes reference to "concepts." But what do we mean when we talk about a non-human animal using, learning or acquiring a concept? The present paper attempts to give a coherent answer to this question, and to indicate what sort of behavioral data we might collect in order to see whether non-humans do possess concepts. In other words, I am going to attempt to give behavioral meaning to the concept o f ’’concept.”
