ABSTRACT

In this paper I will focus on the methodology used to investigate key issues in the study of human memory. While there are a large number of new, imaginative, and potentially very powerful techniques to study memory, a survey paper of this type cannot possibly cover them all. Since some restriction is necessary, the selection is based on methods which apply to the critical theoretical issues in the memory research area. Further, when choices are possible, preference is given to those for which the method ology is relatively well established and of demonstrated reliability. There is no intention to slight some of the very new techniques, but it is a bit premature to include them all in a handbook article of this type.
