ABSTRACT

If you’re a scientist, you can study some aspect of nature for a long time, ask yourself the same question day after day, and keep working on experiments to pin down the answer. And then one morning in the shower, you ask yourself, “What does that question really mean?” You scrub your back some more, and you begin to wonder what it is you’re trying to find out from the experiments you’re doing. And then you may wish you had skipped your shower, because you realize that now you can’t go back to the lab and just collect more data. You’re going to have to spend some time thinking, and thinking is very hard work indeed.
