ABSTRACT

I have tried hard not to write a book about schools and schooling, because learning is something that happens in many contexts besides schools, and often at the direction of the learner rather than any teacher. Hopefully I have succeeded to some extent. But I can’t seem to escape schools for long. Elementary school was just a stepping stone to high school, that to college, that to graduate school, and that to a position at the Graduate School of Education at Harvard, a school in large part about schools. I seem to be getting in deeper rather than out further.
