ABSTRACT

Many studies have examined stressful life events (stressors) and their effect (strain) on psychological and physical health. The role of women has changed considerably over the past few decades, and change is known to be associated with stress (the balance between demand and resources). Yet, few studies have focused on stressors as they apply to women in general, and even fewer have studied the older woman. This paper discusses the role of the older woman today, the interaction of stress and social support, and the results of a comparison of physical and mental health between elderly women with high and low stress and high or low perceived support.
