ABSTRACT

Patients' first insights into their parataxic processes or distortions form a therapeutic milestone. As Sullivan (1940) points out,

Until a patient has seen clearly and unmistakably a concrete example of the way in which unresolved situations from the distant past color the perception of present situations and overcomplicate action in them, there can be no material reorganization of personality, no therapeutically satisfactory expansion of the self, no significant insight into the complexities of one's performances or into the unexpected and often disconcerting behavior of others concerned [pp. 205-206].
