Reflections on Self Psychology

Allthreeofthesecloselyinterrelatedfundamentalprinciplescon~ tributetomakingselfpsychology,asatheoreticalframework,exqui~ sitelyself~reflexiveandpotentiallyself~corrective.Forexample,the conceptualizationofselfobjectfunctionsandoftheeffectoftheirpres~ enceorabsenceonaperson'sself~experiencealertsustothecontinual impactoftheobserverandhistheoriesonwhatisbeingobserved.Put slightlydifferently,theconsistentapplicationoftheempathic~ introspectivemodenotonlytothepsychologicalphenomenabeing studiedbutalsotothetheoreticalideasthatguideourobservations providesuswithanongoingbasisforcriticallyevaluating,refining,ex~ panding,and,whennecessary,discardingthesetheoreticalconstructs. This,indeed,istheaimofthischapter-toapplyafundamentaltenet ofselfpsychology(thatpsychoanalysisshouldbedefinedanddelim~ itedbytheempathic~introspectivemode)toacritiqueofcertaincom~ ponentsofselfpsychologicaltheory.
