ABSTRACT

This chapter describes several cognitive-behavioral coping skills interventions found to be appropriate and effective with adolescent clients. Some of the techniques were originally designed by behavior therapists to bring about changes in overt behavior patterns. However, with growing emphasis over the years on the importance of altering maladaptive cognitions feeding into dysfunctional behavior patterns, many therapists have added cognitive assessment and change components, and this has led to a change in terminology from behavioral to cognitive-behavioral coping-skills interventions. Most of the techniques described here have been simplified and adapted to some extent for use with adolescent clients. References are provided for readers who wish more detailed information. The techniques are: Activity Scheduling, Assertiveness Training, Behavior-Analysis (A-B-C), Skill Training, Contingency-Awareness Training, Conversation-Skills Training, Goal Planning, Graded-Task Assignment, Interpersonal Coping-Skills Training, Problem-Solving Training, Relaxation Training, Self-Monitoring and Self-Control Skills Training and Time-Management Training.
