ABSTRACT

Through a review and analysis of outcome-evaluation research studies, this chapter will attempt to answer the question, “What works for crack smokers in treatment?” What constitutes a state-of-the-art treatment for crack addiction, in this author’s opinion, is a treatment that appreciates the role of biological, psychological, and social factors, as in a biopsychosocial model; recognizes the type of patient for whom the treatment works; acknowledges the phase of treatment or recovery when the treatment should be administered; and includes relapse prevention. A treatment that “works” produces, on follow-up, relatively high rates of abstinence from crack or cocaine.
