ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we discuss the assessment of significant life experiences of the traumatized individual, including personal history, characteristics of the traumatic life events, and the social and cultural context. This assessment helps the clinician and client understand the development of the individual’s self capacities, ego resources, needs, and schemas, as well as providing the context for the meanings of the trauma. In addition, we include a brief discussion of the importance of others’ responses to the victim.
