ABSTRACT

Aggression in primates has been the focus of several empirical studies. A major difficulty in interpreting the results of these studies is that different definitions of aggression are used by different investigators. For the purposes of this study with rhesus monkeys, we define aggression as follows: behaviors directed at another conspecific for purposes of causing physical or psychological harm. Included within this definition are behaviors such as hitting, biting, hostile chasing, and open mouth threats directed at other conspecifics.
