ABSTRACT

To refer back to the Paco demonstrat ion, our third goal there involved a behavioral goal and a version of this protocol . W e wanted to teach h im behavioral ly specif ic ways to alter to the point of absurdity the self-critical behaviors in wh i ch he was almost constantly engaged internally. In this case, the detai led behaviors were ones he cou ld use interpersonally wi th anyone w h o actually cr i t ic ized h im, and especial ly internally in response to his own cr i t ic ism that had resulted from almost every stimulus in his environment concern ing other people and his perceptions about what they were probably thinking of h im. So we s imply spoke about a protagonist named " K a t h y " and gave very little background regarding how we came to know her or why she needed this lecture on improv ing the way she cr i t ic ized herself. Paco knew all about one set of self-critical behaviors and used them regularly, but he had a lot to learn about the self-critical methods we taught Kathy. Pr imari ly, Paco learned some exaggerated, r id icu lous, and even humorous ways in wh i ch a person can cr i t ic ize himself and respond to cr i t ic ism from others.
