ABSTRACT

Frank and Ann Leonard, a Black family in Ohio, have done well for themselves and their two children (Jeff, age 16, and Jennifer, age nine). They own their own home and live in a nice community. However, during the past three months, they have faced several transitions: Ann’s mother died unexpectedly, her father became ill soon after, and during this period Ann returned to work fulltime as a nurse. Ann really wanted to return to her career and knew that the family budget would also be helped by this decision. When asked by a casual acquaintance how the family is doing, the Leonards are quick to reply that “everything is fine.” But is it?
