ABSTRACT

Learning to make Ericksonian interventions is a precise task comparable to mathematics or, if the precision of mathematics seems too severe as a comparison, we might say the task is as precise as tuning an automobile engine. While not as exacting as mathematics, it does require that proper tools be applied in specific ways. The concept of "principles/׳ however, at first seemed to be associated with resolutions, abstract statements, and hopelessly vague notions about proper procedure. Dealing with Erickson's work in terms of principles struck us as awkward and inappropriate.
