ABSTRACT

Functional family therapy represents an integration and extension of two major conceptual models of human behavior: systems theory and behaviorism. It is not, however, simply a juxtaposition of these models, nor does it represent an eclectic arbitrary selection of components from both. Instead, the integration of the two models generates new theoretical and clinical avenues that do not evolve from either one alone. Later sections will expand this concept, but one additional background influence should be considered.
