ABSTRACT

The following intervention is a right braIN approach designed as a means of communicating with the symbolic world of couples who are experiencing an emotional impasse in their relationship. The intervention has been used within the framework of symbol ic-experiential therapy (Whitaker & Keith, 1981). Symbols are embedded in memory during childhood and are formed as a result of one's experiences within his/her family of origin. Although symbols may be resistant to change, healthy families are open to new experiences and information that often results in symbols being altered. In comparison, an unhealthy family is not open to new experiences and information; thus, symbols frequently become fixed and rigid, inhibiting growth. The primary goal of symbolic-experiential therapy is to integrate the world of symbol and the world of experience (Connell, Garfield, & Whitaker, 1990).
