ABSTRACT

Object relations systems theory is the theoretical grounding for the intervention of SILENCE (both literal and metaphorical). The specific construct within the theory that serves as the rationale for the intervention is projective identification. This concept is defined In the Family Therapy Glossary (AAMFT, p.20) as: "a primitive defensive mechanism in individuals and an interactional style of families in which aspects or parts of an individual's personality which feel unacceptable to him are projected onto another within the family. This requires a reciprocal function whereby the other must accept the projection and act in accordance with it."
