ABSTRACT

My work on dilemma as "intervention" stems initially from my interest in strategic concepts such as reframing and paradox (i.e., Selvini Palazzoli, Boscolo, Cecchin, & Prata, 1978; Watzlawick, Weakland, & Fisch, 1974). The distinction between dilemma and paradox is that paradox addresses contradictory or absurd statements, while dilemma deals with awkward situations, e.g., making a choice between unpleasant alternatives. My evolving interest has consisted of exploring ways to use reframing in the most respectful (least game-like) and effective manner possible. Over time I began to "see" or punctuate the concerns of some people as often involving personal and relationship dilemmas. For example, "If I tell my boss what I think of him/her, I might get fired; if I do not tell him or her, I might go crazy."
