ABSTRACT

French educateurs, participants in the International Learning Exchange in Professional Youthwork (ILEX), have been working in the United States side-by-side with American child care workers and, from this shared experience, have observations about the role they have met here. Contrasting what they do here as American child care workers with what their profession expects them to do in France, they find their responsibilities here to be more narrowly

defined and with considerably more emphasis on social control of children and basic caretaking of their residential unit.
