The notion of “challenging behaviour” is perhaps best described by Emerson et al. (1987) as:
Behaviours of such intensity, frequency or duration that the physical safety of the person is likely to be placed in serious jeopardy, or behaviour which is likely to limit or delay access to or use of ordinary community facilities.
