ABSTRACT

Testing was interrupted while Kate went to fetch coffee but the video recorder remained on and Raymond’s behaviour was inadvertently recorded. He closed his eyes, grimaced horribly, yawned, and then began scratching his forearm quite vigorously while laughing to himself. During the entire period he was alone, Raymond continued these and other odd behaviours, only stopping when Kate returned. Such observations are not uncommon when dealing with people with severe learning disabilities but Raymond has a verbal IQ of 125; he reads the Guardian each day; has a deep interest in current affairs; and loves classical music. But in other ways he is definitely quite odd.
