ABSTRACT

Very few studies have been carried out on the Chinese living in Korea, and no research has been done on their educational system. As a result, in this study, author assuming that the Chinese face many problems similar to those that minorities confront elsewhere. Therefore, this literature review will look at the issues other minorities deal with concerning ethnic identity, perception of ethnicity, ethnic schools, and related problems such as those faced by the Chinese in Southeast Asia and the Koreans in Japan. The cultural capital theoretical framework of Pierre Bourdieu has been important in many of the new sociological studies that focus on how and why class status plays a role in educational achievement. Some minority groups, such as African Americans in the US received intense discrimination and lost much of their cultural heritage while other minority groups have maintained high degrees of cultural autonomy and ethnic identity.
