ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the legislation and process of bureaucracy, paperwork, and sponsorship which immigration involves. It discusses the women's experiences in this process and what it meant to their lives. The chapter also describes the naturalization process which, if these women so desired, they would have to follow in order to become citizens of the United States. The process of immigration gives an applicant the chance to experience United States style bureaucracy in its most convoluted form. Advantages for having a green card include an unlimited right to work in US, an unlimited right to live anywhere in US, and eligibility to apply to become a United States citizen. The legacy of the United State's male military involvement in the Vietnam War created the new immigration category of Amerasian children. The majority had a family member that had become a United States citizen or a permanent resident who acted as their sponsor.
