ABSTRACT

A few years ago at the International Fluency Association’s Third World Congress in Denmark, Paul Cooke began his presentation by rolling a bicycle into the room. He used it to make the point that our main role as clinicians is to help our clients move from allowing their stuttering to be the hub of their lives to it simply being a spoke on the wheel (Cooke, 2000). I thank Paul for that very powerful metaphor that has remained with me as a theme that represents what I too believe to be the overarching intention of our treatment with those who stutter.
