ABSTRACT

The CHAT error coding system was designed with the assistance of Joseph Stemberger. All of the examples of speech errors used in this chapter come from Stemberger’s collection of natural speech errors (Stemberger, 1985). In the previous version of this error coding system, errors were always inserted on the main line. The problem with this method of coding is that it interferes with accurate lexical retrieval. In the current version of the system, errors are given on the main line when they are standard lexical forms. However, when they involve phonological changes, the target lexical form is given on the main line and the phonological error is coded on the %err line.
