ABSTRACT

The success of CBR for design applications is dependent on the recognition of design as an ill-structured process in which design goals change and shift as the designer considers different alternatives. In addition to the opportunistic or explorative aspect of design, the nature of design is such that each new design must be different to previous designs. This chapter focuses on the strategies for retrieving design cases in the context of a changing design problem and the strategies for adapting a selected design case for the new design context. This focus is developed through a presentation of the implementation of two case-based design systems, CASECAD and CADSYN. The issues raised by the application of CBR to design are discussed in light of the experience of implementing CASECAD and CADSYN.
