ABSTRACT
Three themes from previous chapters reappear in the study of language processing. First is the axiom of purposiveness and the associated functional perspective on thought and action. This appears in the construction principle, in particular, that the reader/listener is continuously engaged in constructing meaning. Online processes of judgment—decision, involving operations of valuation and integration, are thus basic in reading/listening.
