Instructions to Raters: Item Rating
This manual is intended to be self-teaching. Experiments in which new raters were given only written materials showed that by faithfully following the prescribed exercises, they attained about the same proficiency as most experienced raters. About 2 or 3 weeks, working a couple of hours a day, may be required for basic mastery. After that, individual differences seem to outweigh experience in determining rating skill. All of our raters have been reasonably intelligent and intellectually sophisticated. We have not tested the limits of personal qualities necessary for effective use of the manual. There is no reason to believe that the manual can be used effectively without following a training program substantially like the one described here. Informal observation of persons who tried to bypass the training or who used descriptions of ego levels rather than the manual revealed that they were almost never correct in their ratings.
