ABSTRACT

A recent issue of the New York Times Magazine featured an article about summer love songs. Included was a photograph of the rapper, Method Man, whose song is the current favorite among young lovers; in the photo, he is sitting with his arms wrapped around his long-term girlfriend, Shortie. The caption reports that, while on tour, Method “got lonely” for Shortie, arranged to have her fly cross country to join him, and then wrote the song, “I’ll Be There for You,” upon her arrival. It seems reasonable to assume that Method had other options for female company available to him. As a physically strong, high-status, amply-resourced male (musician), he likely had easy access to a variety of novel and fertile potential sexual partners (fans). But it was Shortie he longed for. Only she would do.
