ABSTRACT

Damage control on board naval frigates is a complex and time-critical task, and the Royal Netherlands Navy has ordered an investigation into the possibilities of decision support systems for supporting Damage Control (DC) officers in carrying it out. The first stage in this investigation was analysis of the functional requirements. Obtaining requirements for decision support systems involves cognitive task analysis, because the tasks to be supported draw on the task performers' knowledge instead of their physical dexterity. This chapter describes the results of the cognitive task analysis carried out in the DC domain. First, a brief description of the DC task itself is presented.
