ABSTRACT

A hybrid approach to case-based design implies that more than one reasoning paradigm and/or more than one knowledge representation paradigm are used within a framework of case-based reasoning. This chapter presents the design and implementation of a computer system to embody and demonstrate a case-based design model that incorporates a constraint satisfaction approach to case adaptation, making use of case-specific and generalized design knowledge. The system is named CADSYN, Case-based reasoning And Decomposition for SYNthesis, and is applied in the domain of the structural design of buildings.
