Tragedy has the capacity to promote growth as well to interfere with development. An early realization of mortality in life may foster increased anxiety, but it also can spur a sober and accurate realization that everyone is vulnerable. Although some siblings found planning for the future diffi­ cult because they grew up in a family in which there was a sick child, as discussed in chapter 2, they considered an increased ability to live for the moment as a present strength.
