ABSTRACT

The extent of laterality of intracranial images is determined by interaural intensitive differences, interaural temporal differences in the gating and ongoing portions of the signal, and in some cases, the bandwidth of the signal. This chapter reviews several of our earphone-based experiments designed to determine the relative potency of these various cues using an acoustic pointing procedure. Unlike the classic work in this area, the present results reveal highly interactive effects with certain combinations of these cues. The outcomes underscore the importance of a “pattern analysis” stage within modern cross-correlation models of binaural hearing.
