ABSTRACT

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), one of the major mental health disorders of childhood, is present in 3% to 5% of the elementary school population, and accounts for more referrals to mental health coun selors and pediatric services than does any other childhood disorder (Barkley, 1990). In addition, many children with ADHD are also diagnosed as having a learning disability, or one of the other externalizing disorders of childhood-oppositional-defiant disorder (ODD) or conduct disorder (CD) (Hinshaw, 1987; Shaywitz & Shaywitz, 1988). Thus, concurrent prob lems in severe academic underachievement, adult-directed defiance, ag gression, stealing, and lying are common among children with ADHD.
