ABSTRACT
Probably the longest-running debate in psycholinguistics concerns the question of whether there are contextual influences on the process of syntactic parsing. The precise nature of this question has changed somewhat over the years, but its underlying basis has remained substantially the same. It boils down to the ques tion of whether there is a stage of sentence processing that can appropriately be described as an autonomous syntactic parser.
