ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews several methodologies for conducting surveys to define user information requirements for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). The use of survey methodology for obtaining information requirements for users of Advanced Traffic Management Systems (ATMS), Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATIS) and Commercial Vehicle Operations (CVO) is the focus of this chapter. The chapter is divided into four sections. Section one discusses the benefits of using surveys to define motorist information requirements for ATIS as well as effective approaches for administering transportation surveys. Section two reviews case studies of surveys as designed and administered by researchers at the University of Washington. Section three reviews the analysis techniques that can be conducted on large and small scale surveys. Finally, section four summarizes the first three sections and provides recommendations for using survey data to define requirements for transportation systems. The surveys were entitled Private Vehicle Survey, Commercial Vehicle Operator Survey, and Dispatcher Survey.
