The Integrative Nature of Identity: Bringing the Soloists to Sing in the Choir

Musicians should have a lot to say about identity. They produce harmoni­ ous sounds in numerous ways: when voices of diverse registers and tex­ tures are skillfully blended as well as when soloists are able to use the rest of the ensemble as a backdrop. Metaphorically, the interplay required for musicians to produce a coherent, balanced performance is not unlike the interplay required for the orchestration of one’s sense of personal identity; both involve blending and integration.
