ABSTRACT

This chapter proposes a conceptualization of the concept of sexual self-esteem, and the coordination of measures, following the guidelines proposed by Fiske. One of the most intimate interchanges between people is in the sexual realm. Optimal sexuality involves a relationship between persons, interpersonal issues, and the emotional climate. In optimal sexuality, reciprocal pleasure and exchange are the primary modes of relating. Optimal sexuality includes heterosexual intercourse, and also includes many other forms of physical sexual expression. Sexual self-esteem is considered a part of Rogers' concept of self and self-structure—positive self-regard. The core of sexual self-esteem is the tendency to value, versus devalue, one's own sexuality, thereby being able to approach rather than avoid sexual experiences both with self and others. Persons at the high end have a positive attitude toward their sexuality, and can enjoy their sexuality with either themselves and/or an appropriate partner.
