ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the highlights of the theory of transfer and the data from Singley and Anderson. It shows there are times when it becomes important to consider other avenues of transfer. The chapter on transfer in calculus presents some transfer data that can also be understood solely in terms of productions, but it also considers other transfer data that require appreciating the declarative origins of the knowledge. It reviews some of the work we have done on transfer in the domain of text editing. The chapter provides some of the clearest evidence for the identical-productions theory of transfer. It reviews the research in Singley on the topic of transfer in calculus, where there is evidence for both declarative and procedural transfer. The chapter considers how the exact amounts of transfer can be predicted by counting overlapping productions. It presents the experiment, which shows a pattern of transfer and lack of transfer that is entirely interpretable at the production level.
