ABSTRACT
Over the last several years, there have been many discussions of the foundations of cognitive science. Is intelligence “the result of the manipulation of structured symbolic expressions”? Or is it “the result of the transmission of activation levels in large networks of densely interconnected simple units” (Pinker & Mehler, 1988, p. 1)? The subject of study here is representational mental states and the principles of organization of computational systems.
