ABSTRACT
This chapter, adapted from Kass' dissertation (Kass 1990b), addresses the third major question related to the SWALE program; it describes how an explanation-building program can make use o f a retrieved XP that is a close, but not perfect match to the current problem. Kass ad dresses this question by describing a module that adapts the old expla nation, producing a new variation that better fits the current problem.
