ABSTRACT

The Big Book of AA contains two chapters written about wives. Al-Anon has its own literature. Sharon Wegscheider (1981, 1985), and Claudia Black (1982), Terry Gorski and Marlene Miller (1982), clinicians who have embraced the Al-Anon and AA perspective have contributed descriptive generalizations regarding spouses. Vem Johnson in I’ll Quit Tomorrow (1980) has also addressed the issue. These sources were used in developing the following statement of the traditional position. My personal exposure gained in the course of working in traditional settings has been drawn upon to make clear how the written recommendations are carried out in practice.
