ABSTRACT

Unfairness operates at every level of society. Unfairness pervades family rela tions: It appears in divisions of household chores, outside jobs, and leisure between husband and wife; it is a constant, sometimes bitter, concern among siblings. Unfairness pervades work situations, in distributions of disagreeable duties, of material rewards, and of intangible status symbols. Unfairness is the origin of many social movements, from the early labor movements to the modern black power and women’s liberation movements. From the smallest social unit to the largest social movement, unfairness is a prime motivation for social interaction.
