ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights several areas of ongoing research and application. It then embarks on the risky business of forecasting characteristics of the next generation of Intelligent Tutoring Systems and those beyond the next generation. The interface is an important feature of an ITS because it is the window through which the student interacts with the domain and instructor. Traditional ID theory-building has taken years, recent advances in cognitive psychology and ITS research have expanded the instructional design domain. Three systems now in development shed more light on the state of the art. These systems, Instructional System Design Expert, Expert Computer Managed Learning, and Instructional Design Environment (IDE) differ along several research issues. There will be many applications of ITSs in industry, the military, and more importantly, in homes and public and private schools and universities. Industry needs to reduce the cost and time required for on-the-job training and avoid costly mistakes. The military needs training for large groups of people.
