ABSTRACT
Most scientific reports and scientific grant proposals in particular are collaboratively written. Most proposals are also multi-media, with equations, figures, tables, graphs, and photographs frequently supplementing the text. Some way of sharing editable, multi-media documents in electronic form could be very useful in the creation and submission of scientific documents, especially where the collaborators are not colocated. EXPRES is a research and development project, funded by NSF, to create an architecture, in the form of a prototype of a next generation information technology environment, that can support the electronic creation, submission, and review of research proposals. The greatest technical challenge in this work is creating an interoperable system that allows the interchange of editable documents produced using a wide range of software on a wide range of workstations.
