ABSTRACT

The goals of the research program to be described were (a) the development of a method to determine the information necessary to detect and control self motion, and (b) the application of that method to the discovery of fundamental principles underlying the perceiving and guiding of self motion. Historical antecedents of the research are followed by a review of the experiments on sensitivity to and control of the optical variables. An organizational framework for the findings precedes a series of conclusions.
